Humanistic Counsellor

PGDip Humanistic Psychotherapeutic Counselling MBACP

Cost: £60.00 per session

Specialisms:

Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Social Anxiety, Health Anxiety, Stress, Relationship Anxiety, Overthinking, Rumination

Works With: Adults 18+

hello from luke

I can only imagine what you’re going through right now, searching for a therapist, wanting to find someone who might understand you and be able to help. I’ve been there myself and remember how overwhelmed I felt.

Psychotherapy is most effective when there’s a good relationship between the therapist and the person in therapy. And that’s what I’m trained in, that’s what ‘humanistic’ therapy really means – building a good relationship with you, as another human being, to help you through your experience of suffering.

I work collaboratively and compassionately, and I’ll always follow where you lead. In our sessions we can explore your experiences so you can better understand yourself, increase your self-compassion, and become better equipped at coping with whatever life throws at you. I’ll help you ‘tune in’ to and embrace all your thoughts, feelings and physical sensations. If we can allow all aspects of you space and acceptance, even the difficult or painful parts, then my experience tells me that your suffering will lessen. I believe everyone is capable of healing the wounds they carry, and I’ll do everything I can to help you along that path.

I work with individual adults (18+), and welcome people of all backgrounds and identities. I’ve got particular experience of working with anxiety – both professionally and through my own lived experience. I also have experience of working with a variety of other issues, for example: grief, depression, substance use and relationship issues.

We can work together for the short-term or long-term, whichever works for you. Our first session will be an opportunity to see if we work well together, and for you to get a sense of how I work.

hello from paul

I have over a decade of experience as a counsellor and psychotherapist, I am dedicated to creating a safe, non-judgmental, compassionate space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings and patterns of behaviour. I’m described as being a warm and grounded therapist.

In my practice I’ve worked with a diverse range of clients seeking support for issues including, but not limited to: depression, anxiety, grief and loss, trauma, relationship problems, substance misuse, emotional abuse, low self-esteem, sexuality, confidence and aspirations.

I believe in a client-centred approach, recognising that each individual is an expert on their own experience. My role is to facilitate self-discovery, growth, and healing. My foundation as a person-centred therapist, combined with my own therapeutic journey, has deepened my understanding of the transformative power of counselling.

I offer a warm and welcoming environment for you to explore your thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations. I use a range of therapeutic techniques such as cognitive-behavioural therapy, mindfulness-based therapy, and solution-focused therapy. I am trained to incorporate somatic healing techniques, bringing felt sensations or bodily held emotions into the therapeutic relationship, enabling you to experience greater awareness and connection with your body.

With your deeper awareness comes the ability to choose and a newfound freedom and authenticity that can be hampered by previous narratives and protective survival mechanisms.

Empowering you to become more self-aware, develop coping skills, and identify your strengths and values is at the core of my practice. I believe that therapy is a collaborative process, and I work diligently with you to develop personalised treatment plans that align with your unique needs and goals. My extensive one-on-one experience with clients from diverse backgrounds equips me to meet a wide range of needs, always striving to understand your world in a non-judgmental manner.

I am a proud member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and adhere to their ethical standards. I am passionate about continuous learning, personal development, and I feel privileged to be able to support a wide range of people on their journeys toward healing, growth and achieving their true potential.

helen carter

Humanistic (Gestalt) Psychotherapist, Supervisor, Mindfulness Meditation Teacher and Group Facilitator

PhD, MSc Psychotherapy, UKCP

Cost: £80.00 per session

Specialisms:

Spirituality, spiritual/psychological integration, embodiment, chronic illness, personal growth, transitions, mid-life, existential questioning

Works With: Adults 18+

hello from helen carter

I remember vividly the experience of looking for my first therapist. Like you now, I imagine, I found myself on numerous websites searching for someone who could help with my problems; someone with whom I could feel comfortable talking about what I was facing in life. I found many of the therapist profiles and presentations of counselling and psychotherapy ‘theory’ (whilst well-intended) distracting and a little overwhelming. And so, putting myself in your shoes now, I want to get across the more human aspect of our work together. In my experience, that is what makes therapy effective after all: two human beings, coming together and forming a relationship that is trustworthy, reliable…and, at times provoking and challenging.

Being human is at the heart of the approach I have trained in – so-called ‘humanistic’ psychotherapy. It is actually quite a radical approach. I understand that right now, you or your life might feel like it needs ‘fixing’; and yes, in our time together each week we will talk about the obstacles or down right impossibilities of your struggles. The humanistic approach doesn’t deny the ups and downs of being a human being. But unlike some other therapies, the humanistic approach doesn’t believe that these highs and lows point to a personal deficit.; you nor your life need fixing. For every single 7.8 billion of us, distress and happiness come and go.

It is our relationship to this human existence that defines how ‘well’ we feel.

Of all the humanistic psychotherapy approaches, it is my view that Gestalt (my chosen modality) is the most transformative. Whilst I know first-hand the power of finding someone to talk to, Gestalt is not simply a ‘talking therapy’. Inevitably, each week in our sessions you will share what is going on for you. We might even ‘put our heads together’ and give thought as to WHY things are the way they are for you. However, in my experience real change, growth, healing come when we drop below the story and into the direct experience of what it is to be you; the HOW of your being.

You will always have the steering wheel of this journey – you know what you want and don’t want better than I ever will. My role is ‘co-pilot’ as you make sense of your ‘human being’; to help you bring together the ‘why’ and the ‘how’; a marriage of insight and awareness. My training and experience as a practitioner of Gestalt will help you find respite from the limitations and predominance of the thinking mind – thoughts, beliefs, stories – and toward greater awareness of the totality of your lived, bodily experience. Sounds challenging, right? It is! And, it might not be what you expected from a ‘talking therapy. I have come to trust the genius of Albert Einstein who said, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”. Talking might offer temporary relief, but we need alternatives to go deeper.

I am a practicing Buddhist, and this undoubtedly flavours my work. Buddhist meditation and its incredible psychological wisdom have informed my own journey toward embodiment; and continue to influence how I facilitate others arriving ‘more in their bodies’. I am also influenced by the ideas of Carl Jung, especially how he likened the space between therapist and client as an alchemical container for the ‘magic’ of personal transformation.

Humanistic theory and transpersonal ideas also influence both my supervision approach and my teaching: I am a Senior Lecturer at the University of Brighton, teaching trainee counsellors and psychotherapists. This role allows me to indulge my passion for writing and research in the integration of spiritual and psychological work. I write a regular blog on these themes, and my first book, “The practice of human being” is due for publication in 2023.

To get a sense of whether you and I might make a good ‘fit’, I invite you to ‘meet Helen’ in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NetLKcTmNNk

Works With: Individual Adults 18+ and Couples

hello from sudakini

I work with individuals and couples.

Individual Therapy

To begin with I offer a free 20 – 30 minute chat to enable us to tune in to each other and make sure that we’re a good fit. Once we’ve agreed to work together your therapeutic journey is shaped by what emerges in the sessions.

I offer a framework for your therapy that provides reparative conditions that are safe and holding. I aim to provide a kind and understanding atmosphere in which your feelings can be processed and validated, creating the conditions that enable you to heal and allow self-insights to emerge and for any outdated patterns to change.

Talking may be the mode in which we do this work or we may include working creatively, for example with pad and pens, using therapeutic sand tray and / or allowing the body’s wisdom a space to be expressed and contained through creative movement.

With a background in professional dance and as a movement psychotherapist, I have an interest in the body-mind connection and for this reason my therapy room is large enough to include movement when and if it’s helpful.

I have training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), as well as in-depth training in Mindfulness from a longstanding Buddhist practice, and whilst I do not work exclusively with these approaches, I find they can be valuable tools to integrate into deeper therapeutic work.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

Internal Family Systems is a powerfully transformative, evidence-based model of psychotherapy. IFS sees the mind in terms of “parts” or as interrelated sub-personalities.  Our inner parts contain valuable qualities and our core Self knows how to heal, allowing us to become integrated and whole. In IFS all parts are welcome.

Couple Counselling

I have trained to work with couples at Re-Vision in London and I offer couple counselling for a range of relationships which includes romantic partners, family relationships (e.g mother / daughter) and business partners.

Intimacy and belonging are so important to us as human beings and for many the relationship with the partner is the primary place where these needs get met; when the relationship isn’t working it can be extremely painful and create a great deal of uncertainty and insecurity.

If the couple is willing to look at what they are bringing to the relationship, if they are willing to be vulnerable and to learn to allow difference, then couple counselling can offer a place to both listen and be heard, to find new ways of relating and discovering new depths in connection with your partner.

Through couple counselling the relationship can benefit from more stability with a more secure attachment, renewed commitment and paradoxically more freedom to be oneself within the relationship. Sometimes when a relationship has ruptured, if there are the conditions to allow staying with the process and learning to tolerate the discomfort, a repair can take place resulting in a new confidence in the relationship and a deeper resilience than before.

As well as providing intimacy and belonging, a couple relationship can be a place where it is possible to heal and grow as an individual. The couple can be a blueprint for other relationships in our life. Allowing the other to be truly who they are can translate into health for the couple relationship as well as for other relationships.

Other couple relationships for counselling can include family relationships (e.g. mother/daughter) or business partnerships.

I work within the ethical framework of ADMP UK.

hello from viviana

Hello, I’m Viviana, I’m so glad you’ve found your way here. I know that life can sometimes feel overwhelming—like you’re tangled in thoughts, emotions.  You may be feeling the aftershocks of a painful or harmful relationship, navigating a significant life change, grieving a loss, or struggling with how you relate to others—or even to yourself.

A key part of my work is supporting individuals who have experienced toxic or abusive relationships—romantic, familial, or someone close to them. These experiences can deeply impact your sense of identity, self-worth, and feelings of safety. I offer a space where we can begin to gently untangle what you have been through, make sense of what’s happened, and support you in reclaiming your voice and confidence. Healing from these experiences is possible, and I’m here to walk alongside you as you find your way forward.

I understand how challenging it can be to choose the right counsellor. How can you know if it’s a good fit from just a few words on a profile? Above all, what I hope to convey is the warmth and safety I aim to offer you.  My therapeutic approach is centred in an integrative, trauma informed practice and together, we create a space where you feel truly welcomed. A space just for you, where you feel seen, heard, understood, empowered, and where all parts of yourself – those you cherish and those you may find difficult to share – are supported.

To help you decide if we’re a good match, I offer an initial 20-minute free telephone consultation. This gives us a chance to discuss what you’re hoping to achieve in therapy and explore how I can best support you. Whether through talking therapy, or clay therapy sessions (which offer a creative approach to emotional healing), we’ll work together with kindness and gentle curiosity to explore and navigate the issues that matter most to you.

Thank you for considering me to support you. If you think that I might be the right fit, please do get in touch – together we’ll find the path forward that feels right for you.
